5 Best Practices Full Stack Developers Use to Avoid Technical Debt
Tumblr media
Fast-paced digital environment, technical debt in software development can quickly spiral out of control if not addressed proactively. Full Stack developers play a crucial role in building resilient systems, and following best practices is essential to ensure long-term scalability, maintainability, and performance. Here are five proven strategies to help avoid the accumulation of technical debt:
1. Writing Scalable and Maintainable Code Scalability and maintainability are the cornerstones of modern software architecture. Full Stack developers must design solutions that grow with business needs without compromising performance. Modular code, proper separation of concerns, and adhering to design patterns help ensure the codebase remains clean and extensible.
2. Using Version Control and Conducting Code Reviews Employing version control systems like Git allows teams to track changes, collaborate effectively, and roll back when needed. Regular code reviews foster collective ownership of the codebase, catch bugs early, and promote adherence to coding standards—all of which help reduce technical debt in software development.
3. Continuous Learning and Upskilling Technology evolves rapidly. Developers who continuously update their knowledge through online courses, technical blogs, or workshops are better equipped to use modern tools and frameworks. Companies looking to hire Full Stack developers should prioritize those with a learning mindset and a track record of growth.
4. Regular Refactoring and Code Optimization As applications scale, some parts of the code can become obsolete or inefficient. Regular refactoring ensures the codebase remains agile and manageable, preventing long-term maintenance nightmares and reducing technical debt before it accumulates.
5. Emphasizing Documentation and Testing Comprehensive documentation and rigorous testing are often overlooked but are vital for onboarding new developers and maintaining software quality. Clear comments, API documentation, and automated tests create a robust development environment and enhance collaboration.
By integrating these best practices into your development lifecycle, businesses can minimize risk, reduce rework, and maintain high-quality output. For companies aiming to build future-proof applications, it’s crucial to hire Full Stack developers who understand and implement these principles to effectively manage and mitigate technical debt.

UX/UI Design: Bridging the Gap Between User Needs and Design Innovation
Tumblr media
Navigating the dynamic world of digital experiences requires a seamless integration of user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design. The synergy between these two elements is crucial in not only meeting user expectations but also driving design innovation. Let's explore the intricate realm of Design Innovation Strategies and User-Centered Design, recognizing their role in forging exceptional digital experiences.
Unveiling Design Innovation Strategies
In the rapidly evolving landscape of technology, Design Innovation Strategies serve as the backbone for creating groundbreaking products. Beyond mere aesthetic appeal, innovation in UX/UI design involves a holistic approach that melds function and form seamlessly. To stay at the forefront, successful strategies require an understanding of industry trends, user behavior, and the integration of cutting-edge technologies.
Embracing User-Centered Design
Effective UX/UI design is anchored in the principle of User-Centered Design (UCD), placing users at the forefront of the creative process. This approach ensures meticulous consideration of user needs, preferences, and behaviors. By empathizing with end users, designers can craft interfaces that are not only visually appealing but also intuitive and easy to navigate. User-Centered Design involves in-depth audience understanding through research, personas, and usability testing, fostering a symbiotic relationship between users and design elements.
Building the Bridge
The magic unfolds when Design Innovation Strategies and User-Centered Design converge. This intersection becomes the bridge where user needs and design innovation seamlessly blend. Let's delve into how these components work together:
1. Iterative Prototyping:
Design innovation often requires exploration into uncharted territories. User-Centered Design comes into play through iterative prototyping and testing. Early involvement of users in the design process allows designers to gather valuable feedback, refine ideas, and ensure the final product aligns with user expectations.
2. Adaptive User Interfaces:
Design innovation strategies often incorporate new technologies. User-Centered Design ensures the seamless integration of these technologies for end users. Adaptive user interfaces that intelligently respond to user behavior and preferences showcase the successful union of innovation and user-centricity.
3. Data-Driven Design Decisions:
Both Design Innovation Strategies and User-Centered Design benefit from a data-driven approach. Analytics and user feedback offer valuable insights that guide design decisions. By analyzing user interactions and behavior, designers refine their innovations to better align with user needs and expectations.
Concluding the Narrative
In the ever-evolving realm of UX/UI design, the symbiotic relationship between Design Innovation Strategies and User-Centered Design unlocks the door to captivating and resonant digital experiences. As designers navigate the delicate balance between pushing boundaries and meeting user needs, they contribute to a landscape where innovation and user satisfaction coexist harmoniously. This dance between the avant-garde and the user-centric defines the future of UX/UI design, paving the way for unparalleled digital excellence.

PB shared the announcement on their blog.
I googled "Series Entertainment" and found article about this news and the article starts with:
Series Entertainment – itself a game development company that "pioneer[s] the use of generative AI to transform imaginative ideas into unforgettable gaming experiences" – says the acquisition "signifies Series' strategy to build out its studio system to deliver a diverse catalog of different genres that leverage its world class development technology, the Rho Engine", the world’s first "AI-native, multimodal full-stack game creation platform". [X]
And here is another article
Series Entertainment, a fast-growing AI game development company, has acquired interactive fiction mobile game studio Pixelberry.
From the companies website...

So basically we told Choices we didn't want AI and they sold the company to an AI entertainment company đŸ€Šâ€â™€ïž

Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy Itchio Beta Update January 30th 2025
You can now get a much more polished version of Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy on itch.io! Payment is optional, but greatly appreciated!
I’m proud of this update despite it not really being quite as extensive as I would’ve liked it to be considering the three months in between the last big public update and now, but as if my some act of God, nearly every single member of our team had some kind of personal life issue (moving, illness, etc.) across all of November and December, which really slowed down our progress on Eureka. We were back full steam ahead in January, and that allowed us to at least push one really big improvement through in time for this update: The mystery-writing guide.
It was important to me to release a big public update this month because January 2025 is when we stated on the Kickstarter that Eureka would be releasing. Well, underestimation and unexpected complications have meant that the game isn’t finished yet as of January 2025, but this big update that you can download and play is us making up for that at least partially, it shows our fans that even though we haven’t met our deadline, we haven’t been slacking off, and we do have a lot to show for it.
In addition to new art, new traits, and rules clarifications, the Eureka rulebook now sports an in-depth mystery writing guide. This comes just in time for those of you participating in our mystery module game jam. (Sign-ups are open now, submissions are open from March to April of 2025.)
In addition to a rulebook update, we have released two previously patron-exclusive Eureka mystery modules, “The Eye of Neptune” and “FORIVA: The Angel Game.” You can find them at this link here. Payment is optional but highly appreciated!
Patreon updates will continue monthly as we work steadily on the project.
Oh and one more thing before we get to the full changelog. As many of you know, we run a “TTRPG Book Club” where the club votes on games to play and then splits off into groups to play them (it’s very schedule-flexible), and discusses them as we go. Well, at the time of writing this, Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy is currently in the lead, which means we are very likely to be playing that next. Join the book club during the sign-up period in the next couple of weeks if you want to play Eureka and discuss it with the developers!
Here’s the full changelog!
Copy-editing Progress: Thoroughly copy-edited up to p. 302. Half-ass copy-edited up to p. 322.
We also released Eureka adventure modules “The Eye of Neptune” and “FORIVA: The Angel Game” into free beta on itch.io. Scroll up to find the link and a game jam!
WHOLE BOOK
CHAPTER 1
Better clarified Unconsciousness.
Better clarified the penalty negation of Grievous Wounds, gave guidelines for what aid may negate what Grievous Wounds, and made it so that these aids can stack to a penalty negation of up to 4.
Edited and simplified the travel time math when using Ticks.
Worsened penalty for using Medicine on oneself from -1 to -2.
Added some quick fix patches to the Assistance Roll section to make it more clear when Assistance Rolls should and should not be allowed. May end up completely rewriting some parts of this section in the near future to make it so that the divide is less based on Investigative vs Non-Investigative, but instead provide clearer stipulations. One potential issue is we really have to be careful not to write the rules so that every character assisting with every Investigative Roll is the optimal strategy, because that would make the game less fun.
CHAPTER 2
New Traits: The Truth Comes Out, Poser
Buffed Believer Trait
Nerfed I’m Okay, You’re Okay Trait
Un-Nerfed I’m Okay, You’re Okay Trait
Made vampires and characters with the Arithmomaniac Trait immune to the “Click” Woo Roll effect
Added Crutches to Item List
More art has been added
Buffed Elementary! Trait
Buffed The Ascot Trait
Buffed The Other Trait
Buffed Poser Trait
Added Nobody’s Fool Trait
Added That’s No Way to Feel Trait
Made some clarifications on Tiers of Fear
Made it so there is a flat PM penalty for investigators that are living out of their vehicles.
Added RVs/campers/trailers to Homes
Lowered the PM of vans and SUVs
Moved Police from Optional to Mandatory on Tiers of Fear
CHAPTER 3
Added a Compromise Armor attack that is also a Movement and can only be done starting from a Grab
More art has been added
CHAPTER 7
Added “How to Write a Mystery” section, a big step-by-step guide on how to write your very own Eureka mystery module.
Added “Starting an Adventure with Disaster” section
Added more guidelines for Eureka’s tone, setting, and lore.
CHAPTER 8
Made it so fairies have to make a reflexes roll to be able to spirit away people with extremely brief contact.
Better clarified some other things about Spiriting Away and “voluntary” skin-to-skin contact.
Added that a Potion of Healing can also cure non-chronic disease.
Added that more potions than just the curse potions can be made curative by adding an extra Table 3 ingredient, and that curative potions can be bought with WP just like other potions.
Clarified that gorgons can’t eat rocks.
Clarified that advanced curses can override each other.
Changed Monsters Eating Monsters section to Monsters vs Monsters and made it a more generalized section about all kinds of edge cases that might come up when monsters interact with each other. The section is kind of disorganized right now but will be cleaned up in copy-editing.
Clarified that all wolfmen have a human form as one of their three forms.
Redid the hunting tables and added the tables for the Bar/Nightclub, Gay Bar/Nightclub, and Gaming/Hobby Store. They are not fully complete but they are at least functional at this time.
Vampires now have a chance to start partially phasing through objects when they are at 0 Composure.
Changed the standard Stealth bonus vampires have at max Composure from +3 to +2.
Adjusted the mechanics for how to permanently “kill” a vampire.
More art has been added
Buffed Learning by Example TFB Ability
Clarified fairies taking voices
Clarified the animal options for the Curse of Transformation

TIPS FOR WRITING COMBAT, TACTICS, AND / OR FIELD MEDICINE SCENARIOS PT. 2
Hello again! Coming out of the woodwork with my niche interests and hoping to pass along some information about writing things such as combat, tactical operations, and / or field medicine!
Disclaimer: I am not a medical professional, nor am I someone who has served in the military or law enforcement in any capacity. Any information in this post is gained from personal research in mostly internet circles. Some topics may be unsettling/disturbing, so please take care in reading.
You can view part one of this post [HERE].
Note: This part will be written more in-depth, as the sources I've pulled from are either no longer accessible, or from narrators I would not feel comfortable platforming due to their motives for sharing this information (e.g., anti-human rights individuals with qualified backgrounds). Knowledge is power, but we don't have to platform fascists in order to share it (* ^ ω ^)
To start this post off, I'll share some archives I've found since part one! This way, if you're just looking for resources and don't want to read something super lengthy, this post is still (hopefully) useful to my fellow writers.
Safety Data Sheets [Archive] - A collection of safety data sheets for what looks like various types of compounds, mostly based around industrial work (e.g., concrete mixes, roof coatings, etc.). While arguably not relevant to this sort of topic focus, I think it could be in the right scenarios, especially as sheets provide first-aid instructions, hazard classification, and details about specific compounds.
War Medicine [Archive] - Definitely a more historical reference (dated 1918), but published by the American Red Cross Society in France covering
war medicine. Includes various diagrams and topics.
Field Manuals and Technical Manuals [Archive] - A collection of field and technical manuals from various military services spanning across various decades. I believe most of these are U.S.-based.
Now, for the in-depth written information, placed behind the "keep reading" button.
CLOSE-QUARTERS BATTLE (CQB) / MILITARY OPERATIONS IN URBAN TERRAIN (MOUT)
CQB is typically defined as a short duration, high intensity conflict characterized by sudden violence at close range. MOUT is an example of a scenario where CQB may be applicable.
When in these environments, it's important for your character(s) to know how to navigate them. The presence of closer-knit buildings, various entryways, and populated environments means there's a lot of risk for both them and those around them.
As such, one of the founding concepts is entry and clearance.
There are many different ways to enter and clear rooms within a building, but the three primary types are as follows:
Conventional (aka: Strong Walling) - The leading individual "commits" to the room by stepping in with their full body, pressing their back to the wall opposite to the door's attachment, and using their upper torso to sweep the room with their light/weapon.
Lateral - The leading individual enters the room at either a 90-degree angle to the door (straight toward back wall of room) or a 45-degree angle (toward the corner opposite to the door).
Framing - Rather than step into the room, the leading individual peeks around the door frame and conducts their sweep from within it (think of them as using the door frame as a "mount" for their weapon, if they have one).
These can be conducted solo, or with a wingman.
A wingman is usually one other individual who stacks beside the leading individual, and uses an over-the-shoulder vantage to provide a secondary set of eyes for cover, while also being able to cover tasks such as opening doors.
Then, there's navigating environments as teams. With teams, there comes a need to develop tactics. With CQB in particular, there are two primary types of strategies:
Dynamic - Rapid movement and clearance; Your character(s) are likely in a high-intensity/time-sensitive scenario where speed is more important than safety. In these scenarios, your character(s) is/are more likely to clear rooms by committing with their entry and flooding in if in a team.
Deliberate - Slower movement and clearance; Your character(s) are likely still in dire circumstance, but they're able to take the time and prioritize safety over speed. In these scenarios, your character(s) is/are more likely to clear rooms by framing and entering one at a time to ensure all angles are covered.
But not every room is a perfect rectangle with wider-open spaces. Regardless of the structure, dead space is an important factor to consider for characters both outside and within these environments.
Dead space simply refers to the space that has not been cleared by the individual(s) entering the space. There are a few different types, including:
Anchored - The object creating the dead space is anchored to a wall, and thus prevents flanking. This could be a dividing wall, and certain types of cabinetry or other furniture.
Unanchored - The object creating the dead space is not anchored to a wall, and thus allows for flanking. This can be
any piece of furniture, crates/boxes/shelves, even certain installation pieces such as a 360-fireplace or showcase tank/terrarium.
Low - The object creating the dead space cannot fully conceal an individual/individuals who are standing, but could if they were crouched or laying prone. This could be things such as couches, tables with cloth over them, etc.
High - The object creating the dead space is elevated above the entry point. This usually, and pretty much only, includes things like stairwells, but it could include higher cabinetry if your character(s) is/are creative enough or able to navigate that.
Moving away from specific scenarios, there is something I've seen written a lot in fanfic and in rp spaces that I think would be important to clarify:
Do. not. attempt. to. catch. a. falling. gun.
I'm serious! In active combat, this isn't as applicable because your character's goal is (ultimately) to neutralize whatever threat is in front of them. Beyond that, though, your character(s) should never attempt to catch.
"But why? Wouldn't you want to stop it from discharging?"
That is why.
Yes, the firearm may discharge when hitting the ground
but in catching it, your character(s) may also discharge it. Unless they know for a fact they will not grab the area around or within the trigger guard, it's highly likely that a finger/fingers will slip into the guard and, due to the force of the catch, end up pulling.
The best practice, especially for a character/characters who are skilled with firearms and versed in safety practices, is to put the hands up and let it fall. Step back, find cover if possible, and retrieve the firearm after it has landed.
And again, I am not responsible for what y'all do with this info. Read responsibly, and stay frosty!

In news to no one, a lot of policy activism is done without considering the politics behind the policy. Take fracking bans in the US. Is there a coalition big enough to support some form of ban on fracking? Yes - or at least there was, it is something that happened after all, it must be viable in some form.
Why is a fracking ban political viable? Because 100% of that coalition is technocratic global warming advocates pushing for carbon taxes and mixed-energy grid transitions, comfortable with limited reductions in living standards in order to achieve the goal? Lol fuck no. That is some of them! Oil as an energy source is a carbon emission, it isn't great, it is a valid reason to pursue it. But they are a minority of the coalition. Some of them are "hard enviro-left" types who also oppose nuclear for example, and either aren't very coherent or are coherent-enough full stack degrowthers, fringe but real. But more, I bet the majority, are environmental NIMBYs - you can ban fracking because they don't like the idea of it happening here. They will support policies to restrict development in new areas of the US that might change the natural environment and cause issues for them close to home.
What they will not support is anything else that makes the policy viable.
They will also block solar installations on NIMBY grounds, or things like transmission lines. They won't actually support carbon taxes or radical changes in how they live to reduce environmental impacts. And most importantly, they will not actually support higher energy prices. LIke at all. The moment you try to "ban" oil or gas imports, this coalition is a ghost. Which means the only impact from a fracking ban is to shift production from the US to other countries - ones that, on average, have a worse track record of environmental enforcement to boot. It doesn't achieve anything at all for the goal of global emissions. The power has to come from somewhere after all! There is no coalition for lowering energy consumption.
This obviously isn't any issue for some random poster online, you aren't dictating policy, support your ideal approach! I support government deployment of exowombs and Kowloon Walled City 2: Immigrant Enclave Boogaloo, trust me I get it lol. But if you are an actual political operative, with influence in policy, understanding this dynamic is literally your job. Spending political capital on fight X, that only does anything if you also win fight Y & Z, and you have no hope of winning those, is deeply counterproductive. There is no substitute for smart strategy. (And it isn't like there aren't better ideas out there - permitting reform for green energy projects is like sitting on the table guys)

I had a game development idea, so if you’d like to hear me ramble about an idea involving ATB and Stamina systems in RPGs, follow me. I should warn you though, that this is probably the longest post I’ve ever written.
So, I was looking at gameplay of Final Fantasy 13 out of curiosity, and a thought struck me.
Xenogears, Chrono Cross, and Legend of Legaia all use something I refer to as a stamina system for their attacks: You have a certain amount of points, and you can use as many of them as you want in a given turn, with extra bonuses sometimes stacking on top depending on how many and what types of attacks you’ve used. If you wanted to stretch the definition, then you could argue that Baten Kaitos does this as well, but with cards instead of basic attacks.
This made me realize that Final Fantasy 13 did something similar, but using Time as your resource. You can have an entire log of basic attacks, a medium amount of medium attacks, or a limit break that takes up all your time. What also separates FF13 from the aforementioned examples is that FF13 uses it for all of their abilities and options, instead of just basic attacks.
I know that a lot of the criticism towards FF13 comes from having to rely on auto-input rather than manually planning out your turn. So I started to think on how I would maybe handle the same idea of an “ATBar as Resource” or a take on something inspired by FF13.
My theoretical battle system goes something like this. Like FF13 your options revolve around queuing up sets of commands for your character or characters to enact. Unlike FF13, you have as much time as you’d like to have when deciding your commands. (Think Wait mode in classic FF games and Chrono Trigger, where time pauses as you scroll through your magics.) However, your turn only starts once you’ve queued up your attacks and what have you. When you’ve finished selecting your strategy, the time starts ticking and the abilities you’ve selected all start to charge up, going off when they reach full charge. Like Xenogears Deathblows, there would even be extra moves and bonuses for choosing the right combinations. The key difference here is that it applies to more than just basic attacks. Like using two spells that go off at the same time to combine, or using ascending levels of spell to create an ultimate attack for that element.
I actually made a little design guide for comparison, and hopefully explain the idea better.
Tumblr media
I realize that stamina systems might be best used in a more traditional turn-based system, so that the player isn’t getting overwhelmed by constant inputs. However this is why I suggest the pausing as the player picks commands. To keep this more in line with ATB, all of the turns will have a separate ‘Cooldown’ phase that determines when they’ll be able to act again. Maybe even have this cooldown extend the more actions or longer actions are taken. To keep this from getting to confusing, I’m suggesting color coordination. I’m picturing something like this:
Tumblr media
(I was worried the photo wouldn’t look good. My colored pencils are not the best quality.)
Hopefully even a system as theoretically complex as this would be manageable if everything is laid out properly. A standard party status would look something like this:
Tumblr media
Revisiting the whole Combo Finisher/Deathblows mechanic, I feel like this is a personal preference rather than a solid design necessity, but when your combat relies heavily on experimentation, a clear way to keep track of what works is vital. I’m not suggesting that all the combos are listed fighting game style right off the bat, but rather that the game keep track of discovered combos and potential combos.
Like, say that you have used the level 1 Thunder exemplified in my first diagram, but you haven’t yet acquired the other two Thunders, or if you have them but haven’t used them in that order yet. Then when you start your turn with Thunder it will register in a database that you can check on the main menu. It will say “[Thunder l.v.1] + [???] + [???] = [???]” This doesn’t really tell the player much, but it does say at least that there is a combo move that starts with the basic Thunder. This means the player will find out when they are on the right track, won’t hesitate to experiment, and have a place to check their moves if they step away from the game for a while. I’m not a believer in explaining to the point of killing discovery. However I’m also very much against blind aimless wandering.
This last idea might be a step too far, but at this point I’ve spilled everything else, I might as well spitball this too. What if, in this theoretical RPG, you could combine turns? Pass one character so that when the next one finishes cooldown, they pool the available attacks and queue points so that even bigger and more complex combos can be built?
Idk Man, it’s half-an-hour into the next morning, and I don’t even know if a game like this sounds like a good idea. I am not, have never been, and most likely never will be a game developer. This is just the most detailed gamecrafting thought that I’ve ever had, and I feel like it should be written down and documented just in case. And hey, if there are any Indie devs out there who would want to take a crack at this type of combat, please tag me, I would Love to see if this works in practice as well as it does in concept!
Thank you all for indulging my very detailed ramblings.

UX/UI Design: Bridging the Gap Between User Needs and Design Innovation
Tumblr media
In the dynamic landscape of digital experiences, the synergy between user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design plays a pivotal role in shaping the success of a product. As we delve into the intricate realm of Design Innovation Strategies and User-Centered Design, it becomes evident that the intersection of user needs and design innovation is the nexus where exceptional digital experiences are forged.
Understanding Design Innovation Strategies
Design Innovation Strategies are the backbone of creating products that not only meet user expectations but also push the boundaries of what's possible. In the fast-paced world of technology, where trends evolve swiftly, design innovation is the catalyst that propels a product from being good to being groundbreaking.
In the context of UX/UI design, innovation doesn't merely refer to flashy visuals or trendy aesthetics. It encompasses a holistic approach that integrates both function and form seamlessly. Successful design innovation strategies involve staying abreast of industry trends, understanding user behavior, and incorporating cutting-edge technologies to create a user experience that stands out.
The Essence of User-Centered Design
At the heart of effective UX/UI design lies the principle of User-Centered Design (UCD). This approach places the user at the forefront of the design process, ensuring that their needs, preferences, and behaviors are meticulously considered. By empathizing with the end user, designers can craft interfaces that are not only visually appealing but also intuitive and easy to navigate.
User-Centered Design involves a deep understanding of the target audience through research, personas, and usability testing. It's about creating a symbiotic relationship between the user and the design, where each element serves a purpose and contributes to a seamless user journey.
Bridging the Gap
The real magic happens when Design Innovation Strategies and User-Centered Design converge. It's at this intersection that the bridge between user needs and design innovation is built. Let's explore how these two critical components work in harmony to create extraordinary digital experiences:
Iterative Prototyping:
Design innovation often involves taking risks and exploring uncharted territories. However, these risks need validation. This is where User-Centered Design comes into play with iterative prototyping and testing. By involving users early in the design process, designers can gather valuable feedback, refine their ideas, and ensure that the final product aligns with user expectations.
Adaptive User Interfaces:
Design innovation strategies frequently involve staying ahead of the curve with new technologies. User-Centered Design ensures that the integration of these technologies is seamless for the end user. Adaptive user interfaces that respond intelligently to user behavior and preferences are a testament to the successful marriage of innovation and user-centricity.
Data-Driven Design Decisions:
Both Design Innovation Strategies and User-Centered Design benefit from a data-driven approach. Analytics and user feedback provide valuable insights that guide design decisions. By analyzing user interactions and behavior, designers can refine their innovations to better align with user needs and expectations.
Conclusion
In the ever-evolving landscape of UX/UI design, the symbiotic relationship between Design Innovation Strategies and User-Centered Design is the key to creating digital experiences that captivate and resonate with users. As designers navigate the delicate balance between pushing boundaries and meeting user needs, they contribute to a landscape where innovation and user satisfaction coexist harmoniously. This intricate dance between the avant-garde and the user-centric is what defines the future of UX/UI design, forging a path toward unparalleled digital excellence.

just for me:
a catalogue:
Tape Guy
He sits on the left shoulder. He isn't exactly part of you but he has a big stack of video tapes of your memories, and those are part of you. He pushes a video into your ear of times you were an idiot, cringe or shitty, and plays it on repeat while indicating that you should draw your own conclusions.
Shoulder Lawyer
We know this one: he is small and he sits on the right shoulder and, as we have discovered, he is a bullshit artist. He cherrypicks the evidence that Tape Guy and the Brain take in and makes the case that you cannot prove the guilt of anyone who hurt you. He says 'it didn't happen, and if it happened it wasn't anyone's fault, and anyway my client is just a sad little birthday boy and you are an unreliable vindictive slag.' it is very important to him to preemptively discredit you in case you say something that might incriminate someone, so he devotes his time 24/7 to establishing your poor character. He is not a real lawyer and he's being paid to do this. He is not part of you at all, he pretends to be an objective third party outsider and he is, of course, Not That, he's a guy who's personally deeply invested in discrediting you. No part of this guy is You.
Brain/Data Centre
this probably isn't a guy. It's a computer, but it's also you - it's a part of a person, not a machine, but it is a calculator not an animal. It takes in data - all data: how you feel, how your body acts, what your first thought is, what the lawyer says, what other people say, how people move and react, emotional input, what's happened in the past, what other people have said - and it uses that to construct theories.
The Brain is very verbal, structured and precise. It moves very fast - often so fast it's absorbed and developed a new theory before it's finished expressing the previous one. So it's precise but it's not clear, it's often interrupting itself or running parallel overlapping processes. What the Brain is trying to do is Make It Make Sense. The Brain is trying to get as close as it can to the truth of something. It understands everything as a useful data point, but it takes all of them as being valid, so it's very susceptible to the suggestions that the Shoulder Lawyer makes because it understands falsehood and misdirection very well, and considers them useful data points, but it doesn't understand the idea that someone within the system would be putting in bad inputs on purpose. It lives in the head, mostly in the front half of the skull cavity, behind the forehead.
The Accountant
The Accountant isn't entirely a separate guy - he's a sort of outpost or partial avatar of the Brain. If he's a person, he is gaunt and full of extremely directed nervous energy. He lives in a very close-to-the-surface thin space between the skull and the skin of the forehead, and he runs the numbers that the Brain has available and tries to balance the books. He makes plans and suggests strategies. He has two motivations; to help you move forwards productively and to balance the costs, which will be many. Part of his job is to assess what you can and can't afford to lose, what will cost more in the long run, and how much you need to keep in reserve for the future in order to keep the system running and have a buffer for emergencies. He thinks in spreadsheets and flowcharts, and he wants the Brain to give him the best possible data picture so he can make the least costly and most profitable decisions. He doesn't decide what profit is, though, that comes from lower down. He is a guy, but he's definitely part of you - he's a guy your brain made to interact with the outside world.
[Gesture towards the chest]/🌄
The Brain tries to interpret it, but because they can't communicate directly, the Brain has to guess by observing how it acts. The Brain constructs a lot of theories based on inputs and outputs, but it can't convert any of its actual [thoughts (?)] into meaningful data because their language is mutually unintelligible. The Accountant and the Brain can't convince it of things, or understand with clarity what it wants, not because it doesn't think but because they can't communicate.
This doesn't have a name, and it can't have a name, because it isn't a person and it doesn't use words. It is very much You and it is highly, highly sentient and conscious, but it is very much not any kind of guy or a comprehensible mind. It is a roiling orange and red glowing thing that is in constant turning fluid motion in the chest cavity.
Where the other parts are anthropomorphic, animal, or very verbal machines, this is a completely alien sort of consciousness. It doesn't really have sensations attached to it, but it moves and swells and makes itself known by pressing against the things near it. As far as you can tell, the ways it pulses, expands or moves faster or slower are how it communicates itself, and it's clearly a complex language, but not one that has any relationship to a verbal one or that's comprehensible to you, the Brain or the Guys.
The Body
I mean all of this is happening in your body. But The Body lives in the belly, under the diaphragm and above the hips, and if you ask what the body is doing, your attention first goes there then branches out to everywhere else.
The Body is animal, it's meat and biological mechanisms. It includes all physical reactions from crying to sore knees. What the body wants is the mechanisms of survival - it isn't really a thinking thing, it's a very wet and alive machine which can go wrong or function differently in response to stimuli.
Because the Body sits right up against the chest cavity, and because it just responds to stimuli rather than trying to understand things, the Body is the most likely to react to 🌄. The movement of 🌄 presses down into the Body and triggers impulses (like nausea or crying) which are the main way the Brain can collect data on the movements of 🌄 and make assessments about what it's thinking.
The Body is purely reactive. It doesn't have any motives of its own other than to keep functioning. It throws up flags or sets off alarms when something happens that might impede it, but it isn't sentient - it's only alive. It 'wants' me to sit down like a car 'wants' me to fill it up. It doesn't respond to the Brain, the Brain observes it and the Accountant suggests appropriate changes to your behaviour to adjust the inputs you're giving the Body.
The Guard
This is either a guy or a muscle group. He lives in the back of the oesophagus and the surrounding muscles, and his job is to stop the constant rising movement of 🌄 from getting out into the throat and mouth. I think his job might originally have been to connect the 🌄 to the Brain but now he's full-time committed to tamping down the 🌄 in case it floods or erupts.
He alerts you about high motion and agitation of the 🌄, and, if the tide gets too high, he clamps the gap shut and and clings on for dear life. He's also the guy who keeps you calm and together in a crisis - he holds you steady and keeps you breathing while the Accountant works.
The Ineffable Exhortation
This isn't a new voice but it's reaching through. Initially you didn't think it had a physical place in the body and it was just You, but now you've located it in the lower back of the head, just behind the soft palette, nestled in deep. This is absolutely part of you. It says things like 'you should touch a tree' or 'you want to talk to this specific person right now' or 'that's not right'
It doesn't necessarily explain its reasoning, although I think it has reasons. It talks sometimes, but mostly it works quietly, and the only evidence it's working is that it occasionally asks for food or rest or makes specific requests.
It only speaks in order to tell you what to do, which is ok because what it asks you to do is basically always a good idea (or completely neutral, like 'touch a tree' or 'sit on the floor'). It doesn't boss you, it just says quietly, calmly, and with considered certainty 'you need to...'
Kind of like the Body, it's asking for things it needs to run its processes. Sometimes those things are obvious ('you need to have X conversation') and sometimes they're extremely esoteric and seemingly random ('you need to rearrange these boxes'), but I trust that they're ingredients it needs to run itself.
Unlike the Body, which is a purely reactive system, the Ineffable Exhortation is all sentience. Like the Brain, it is devoted to processing; unlike the Brain, it doesn't loop you in most of the time. It's capable of speech, but it chooses to keep quiet unless it has something specific to request.
I am reasonably sure that the Ineffable Exhortation is the only part of you that can speak both verbal language and the language of the 🌄 with equal fluency. It knows directly, from the horse's mouth, what the 🌄 wants, and it also knows what the Brain wants and keeps an eye on the Body. It works very hard to translate all three into instructions, but it only speaks when they're all in agreement, and because the Brain and 🌄 can't communicate directly, it is doing a whole lot of mediation and translation to get even one thought together.
The Guard gets in the way of the Ineffable Exhortation a lot, and historically has been quite hostile to the Ineffable Exhortation, not because he dislikes it, but because it agitates the 🌄. This both prevents the Exhortation hearing from 🌄, and prevents the Brain from hearing from the Exhortation, because the Guard is often standing between the Exhortation and the Brain and refusing to let them talk in case it upsets the balance.
The Brain values the Ineffable Exhortation, which gives it another very clear sets of data points to triangulate with, and helps it guess what the 🌄 is doing. But the Guard gets in the way of the Brain hearing from the Ineffable Exhortation.
The Accountant is neutral towards the Exhortation, except inasmuch as part of his risk analysis involves weighing up the costs and benefits of obeying the Ineffable Exhortations. He does weigh his calculations towards the Exhortation, though, because past experience suggests it's likely to have unexpected benefits.
The Shoulder Lawyer fucking hates the Exhortation. This is because the Shoulder Lawyer's whole job is to cast doubt on the reliability and certainty of you as a whole system, and the Exhortation is utterly certain. There is not a glimmer of self-doubt in the Exhortation. You can deny its requests because the Accountant says despite his best efforts to square the sums, they're impractical or impossible at the moment, but you cannot disbelieve in the rightness of them, or think they're the Wrong Call.
The Exhortation only says things it is 100% sure of, beyond a shadow of doubt. Unless it knows them to be the correct thing, it keeps them to itself and continues processing; once it is 100% sure what needs to happen to move the process forward, it will tell you, gently but insistently. If the Exhortation's demand fades, you don't have to do it - it's found another route forwards. If it persists, it's because you need to do it.
The Lawyer hates the Exhortation because the Exhortation is immune to the Lawyer. The Exhortation can't be convinced by an argument and it can't be called upon to doubt itself.
The Exhortation isn't in charge. It isn't God or a boss or a pilot. The Exhortation just processes everything that the Brain and the 🌄 (which are the fundamental thinking parts that are entirely You) have to say, and coalesces it into meaning.
It provides action, but in a different way to the Accountant. The Accountant is receiving instructions about what you aim to achieve and translating those into individual steps and checks; the Exhortation is what produces the aims. It doesn't always explain what they are or what they have to do with each other (although the Brain tries to connect those dots, because that's what it does), it just combs through all the complexity and mess and overlapping information that the Brain, Body and 🌄 are working with, and coalesces them to the core.
(this is the bit that says 'this is holy' or 'this is a moral good' and it's also the bit that says 'you should eat a burger' and 'you want to stay on the sofa'. All its statements are delivered in the same certain, factual tone, without more or less weight, but the Accountant is running numbers that say 'a burger costs too much and you can get 90% of the same benefit with any protein' or 'it will cost a lot to die on this hill but it will break the system to ignore it, so we have to do it'
The Guard keeps you thinking straight in a crisis, but it's the Exhortation that allows you to stay the course. The Exhortation knows that this is all going somewhere, and it can tell the difference between a discomfort that is just doing you harm, and the kind of pain which is happening as a side effect of change. It says 'hunker down' or 'guard yourself' when it's a storm to survive and get out of and it says 'this needs to happen' when the storm is the only way to get where you're going.
You do not think the Exhortation is the voice of God. It is definitely part of You, and it isn't delivering instructions from on high, it's reporting out the aggregate results of the calculations and inputs that the rest of You are working on. However, you do think that the Exhortation could be mistaken for the voice of God, and that it has a lot to do with That of God. But it's important to know that the Exhortation is coming entirely from You. There's no outside force involved.
The Exhortation can probably be wrong, but maybe not? It could easily be wrong if it ever made statements about the world outside You, but it doesn't - it says what You need, and it is the best placed of anything in Yourself or in the world to know that.
